If you are planning to put live plants in your aquarium, you can go for plants like Riccia, Moneywort etc. These plants don’t require any special equipment like CO2 injectors or any kind of fertilizers. But there are hardly any advantages of putting live plants in the aquarium. They provide the same substitute for the fake plants. They don’t contribute enough quantity of oxygen but however they do lower down the nitrate level little bit.

Live plants would provide a very good environment for your fishes to grow. Not only would the plants provide ample oxygen, but it would also help in lowering down the level of nitrates in the water. Plants would be a good source of food for the herbivorous fishes. You can go for live plants like Cabomba, Elodea, Java Moss, Java Fern, Dwarf Hairgrass and Chain Swords. These plants don’t need any kind of extra care and it would be really worthwhile to plant them in your aquarium.

I also have live plants in my aquarium. You should also go ahead and use them in your aquarium. Planting live plants in the aquarium is very beneficial for the fishes. Before you purchase the plants, make sure that the plant is snail free and egg free. I had earlier planted one in my aquarium and I had a hell of difficulty in getting rid of that plant. You would have to provide sufficient light say 3 watts per gallon of water and you will have to regularly trim the plants. The plants are no doubt a bit expensive but I must tell you there are many advantages of planting them in the aquarium.

Planting live tree in the aquarium is a very nice idea because it would add plenty of fresh oxygen to the tank which would be healthful for your fishes. Secondly it can provide as a hiding place for the baby fishes. Make sure that the plants receive plenty of light otherwise they would die.

Keeping live plants in the aquarium largely depends upon the nature of the fish. If you are keeping mollies, platies etc in the tank, then you don’t need to worry about the plants. But for the other species of fishes, they might uproot the plants or might eat them. The important thing to remember is that most plants carry snails with them that can clog the filters and can make the cleaning of the tank a difficult task. So when you are buying a plant, just make sure that they are snail free.
