My horse is always excited! What do I do?
I have a 12 year old thoroughbred that has a very high temperment. He will NOT stand still at shows and he spooks easily. Some people tell me that I should sell him and get a calmer horse, but I really have an emotional connection to him. Is there anything I can do to calm him down? Well, you could always try lunging your horse before you ride, or have him run around a round pen, empty arena, or empty paddock or something like that. If your horse wont stand still after all that, then you could try teaching him to bend his head on your command, so he feels like he's still doing something, since some horses get bored standing still. Use positive reinforcement when he does something right, rather than negitive when he does something wrong. Just remember to be patient with him, my horse had the same problem, and when i got frustrated, i just made it worse. :( but when i tried these tips, they worked, and she turned into the calm, sweet, patient horse that i wanted her to be. (shes a paint though, not a thoroughbred!) Answered by vivaluver45 1 year ago

hi, thoroughbreds do usually have high temperments and are very unpredictable. in most cases it depends what feed he is on, most hard feed gives horses lots of energy, try horse feed that has none of that, beat pulp is a good one which i use and my horse is well behaved on this and very calm, also be firmer with him he maybe thinks you are a push over and is trying his luck which all horse try.
