Our kitten is acting very strange, paralytic with eyes open...any ideas?
Thanks in advance for answering this question!
My wife and I have been raising a kitten for the past two weeks (it is now 5-6 weeks old), the kitten will start off by randomly walking around like he's drunk (this has happened a total of 4 times so far). He'll start to wobble and then eventually it will get so bad that he will lay on the ground (or on our lap) and won't be able to move a muscle. He may twitch slightly but he won't even be able to blink his eyes (they are open the whole time), he won't be able to swallow (we drip water on his mouth/gums to keep him from dehydrating) or be able to keep his mouth closed (so he will drool and his tongue may hang out). He will be in this state for about 6-10 hours and then he'll come out of it like nothing happened (maybe just a little groggy). He'll go 3-4 days and then have another one of these episodes. For us it's pretty scary and time consuming...making sure he's ok.
We took him to a vet tech the first two times that it happened and all she did was inject him with fluids and wait it out (she didn't think he would make it through the night either time because of a low temp). She said that he may be hypoglycemic (or something) and maybe he wasn't getting enough sugar into his diet. She suggested that we mix honey into his formula and wet food to see if that fixed the problem. So far it has not!
Now that this is a pretty regular occurrence (it happened two days ago and then again tonight), we'd like to know if anyone has heard of something like this happening and what may be the cause. Any recommendations are appreciated!
Thanks again,
Chais
