I would recommend you to buy African Dwarf frog and a betta both in a five gallon tank. They are very easy to care for and don’t require enough space. They would be best for a small aquarium. Alternatively betta would work great in a small tank. Since they are not very large in size, they would be comfortable in a small aquarium.

I don’t think that goldfish would be a good option for a small aquarium because they grow to a size of 8 inches. So it would be very difficult to contain such a big fish in a small aquarium. Moreover each goldfish would require about 15 gallons of water. Betta fish would be a better option for you keeping in view of the aquarium size. Fancy guppies would also be good for you. You can also opt for the different tropical fishes as well. These would not only require less care but can be comfortably accommodated in a 5 gallon tank.

Since you are looking for a small fish that can be taken care easily, you should go for the betta fish. These fishes are very easy to look after but it requires heater as well as filter in your aquarium. You can also go for goldfish which does not require a heater but you would have to change the water in the aquarium on a regular basis. Just make sure that there is plenty of light in the tank for the fish to grow properly and you can add some plants in the aquarium which would be helpful in adding oxygen and would lower down the level of nitrates in the water.

You can purchase betta fish. It is a very nice fish that grows not more than 2 inches. So this fish would be good for small aquariums. Dwarf Gouramis is also a very good fish for small aquariums. It also grows up to size of 2 inches. You can also go for the Siamese fighting fish which requires not more than 2.5 gallons of water with an airstone. Goldfish would also be a very good option
