I also have a cat. Initially you would have to spend a little more money than you have thought on your cat. Eventually after six months, the expenses would come down. It is so because the kitten initially requires regular spraying or neutralized but after some time the expenses came down rapidly. It had taken me about 200 dollars for the total shots for my baby kitten. But if you go for cheap clinics, it would be about $100 for all the shots. Approximately 50 dollars would be spent on its food and grooming. You should keep aside 50 dollars per year for the veterinary visits.

These days’ people are spending a fortune of money for proper adaptation of their cats. You would be requiring 4 litter bags that would cost you $20. From eating perspective, it would require another 30 dollars monthly depending upon the diet that you go for your cat. The cats do not require a lot of grooming. Hence you are saved from the grooming expenses. Cats require occasional trimming of the hair around their neck and chin and weekly brushing of their furs to avoid knots. Every 3 months you would have to take your cat to the veterinary doctor that would cost you approximately $50 per year. If you want to buy toys for your cat, that would cost you another 5 dollars.

Adopting a cat would not cost you tons of money. It would come around roughly $100 per month on your cat that includes visit to the veterinary doctor also. For some months you won’t be requiring to visit the vet, so it would not cost you $100 per month. The food expense would depend upon you whether you want to go for dry food or the canned ones. Either way it would cost you around $50 per month. For the grooming purpose, you don’t require to spend a lot of money. Just buy a good brush for brushing the furs of your cat which would cost you around 2-3 dollars and not more. For Flea and Tick collar it would cost you between 20 and 30 buck monthly.

Here is a spreadsheet from the ASPCA on pet costs that shows the initial cost of getting a cat as well as what you can expect in annual expenses:

Your best bet is to adopt from a shelter because adoption costs are generally less than the cost of spay/neuter/vaccination for a cat from other sources. Plus you get to save a life!
