It is good that you are brushing your cat regularly to avoid knots. As far as the old ones are concerned, I would suggest you to apply certain conditioners or sprays that is available in the market and is meant especially for the cats. This non toxic spray would help you to get rid of the older mates. If the mates are gone then fine otherwise try to cut them carefully with a pair of scissors. I would not suggest you to take your cat to a groomer because in spite of their vast experience, they make the cat freak out and you would not be able to get the desired results.

It would be best for you to take your cat to a professional groomer where they would get rid of the older mates by shaving it properly. You can perform this task even at home but there are chances that you might hurt the fragile skin of the cat while running the razor.

I can very well understand your problem because I also own a long haired cat. Getting the mates is a very serious thing and it should not be ignored. It is so because later on it might turn into deadly sores. It would be better for you that you take a razor and very carefully and cautiously try to shave the mates. Make sure that you don’t get closer to the skin. Just make sure the razor is running just beneath the knot. After that use non scented baby wipes on that place where you had applied the razor. In this way you can get rid of the older mates. And don’t worry because new fur would start growing in a couple of weeks.

I can on the untangled mates. You can either do it on your own or try a veterinary doctor. Try to trim the hair but be careful of not shaving it because she might get a rush. These long haired cats need extra attention and she would require a special type of cat litter so that the stuff does not get attached to understand your problem. I would suggest you to give her a very good bath. After doing so apply some conditioner her fur. You can alternatively take her to a good groomer where they would shave down some hair not all the way to the skin. This in turn would solve the problem of the mates.

I own a lot of cat. I have right now 4 Persian long haired cats. You should try to brush your cat daily and hence no new mates would come up. But as far as the older mates are concerned, you should not try cutting them with scissors because by doing so you might nick the delicate skin of your cat. You can try some clippers. That’s all I can suggest.
