It would be better for you to roam around the shelters and try to play with a few kittens. Then you would have an idea which kitten would be the best for you. You would then have a very good idea about their habits and personality; whether they are playful or lazy.

It really does not matter whether you are buying a cat or a kitten but the important thing is that whether it is healthy or not. If it is not healthy a lot of your money would be wasted in the treatment. So look for a healthy cat or a kitten. In order to pick a healthy one, make sure that no discharge is coming out from their eyes and it is responding when you are making a noise. The cat does not act with pain when you are touching it and the cat is neither very skinny nor fatty. Most importantly, check whether the furs are shiny and there are no sores or knots on the body. In this way you can pick up a healthy cat or kitten. In order to pick a friendlier one, find out whether the cat is happy to see a human being and it does not bite or scratch them.

Since you have mentioned that you want a playful cat and not a lazy one, it would be best for you to go for an adult rather than a kitten. You never know how the kittens would behave when they grow old. A playful kitten might grow up to become a very lazy and not playful cat. So in the best interests for you go for a cat rather than a kitten.

Choosing a cat is a very difficult thing. Let me tell you that it is not you who chooses the cat but it is the cat that chooses you. It would be best for you to spend some time in a shelter where you can play with the little kittens and there you can decide which one would be the ideal kitten for you. Since you are looking for a kitten, but a slightly grown up cat will also be a very good option for you. It is so because there are many advantages owning an adult cat like you can tell what kind of personality you are going to have like talkative and they are really trained enough to use a litter box themselves. Kitten on the other would require extra care and attention. As far as laziness is concerned all the cats get lazy as they grow older. If you are spending plenty of time playing with your cat, they would remain playful for a very long time no matter what their age is.

If you are thinking about getting kittens, they turn out like the way you raise them. If you are getting an adult cat, then look for their characteristics what you are waiting for. If you are thinking about buying a juvenile, then be careful about the fact that these cats have already learnt some habits and it would really be an uphill task for you to change those habits. This is all I can tell about picking the right cat for you.
