You can make use of the plywood for any side but for the front part you should use plexi so that you can easily see your savannah monitor. You can go to the hardware shop and buy some waterproof sealant which is safe for the animals. You can also buy a two part epoxy paint which is textured and also looks like sand. You have to paint the bottom part and approx 1’ up that is the plywood sides so that it doesn’t get warped or wet.

For thickness, it totally depends on how you are building. If you are using some kind of frame then you can make it thin. Its thickness also depends on how much you are going to spend. When your monitor get old then it will require a WAY big enclosure. So, you should build a big terrarium so that you don’t have to rebuild it and waste your time with money.
