Why does my 10 week old puppy bite?
My puppy is a red and white siberian husky. We got him from a breeder and the puppies were all timid and isolated from the outside world and people. I do not think that the breeder did anything to them but my puppy is a loving, licking, sweet little puppy until you pick him up. He had roundworms really bad and a urinary tract infection but both have been treated. There have been 3 or 4 incidents that when we have tried to pick him up he will just start biting (but not a play bite). I thought at first it might be that we scared him or hurt him b/c of the infection but I am not so sure that is the case now. I have two small children and Draco (the husky) is going to be bigger than them very soon. He will let you pick him up most of the time but it is based on his terms. What should I do? This can turn into a serious problem if not addressed quickly. The seemingly obvious answer is to not pick him up, but that would not solve your problem. The concern is if he thinks he can get away with aggression and wins, he'll use it in other situations. You need to pick him up more often and make it a good experience. Tell him he is a good boy, offer him a small treat and then quickly put him back down. Do this often but in small doses. If he does try to bite, gently depress the back of his tongue and tell him "no." Put him down and try again. While he is on the floor you also want to do things to try and desensitize him to things that make him uncomfortable. I am guessing if you gently squeeze his paws or rub him toward his back end a massage pressure it may set off the same biting. You MUST establish that you are Alpha ans in control. Also, using a startling noise like a short "shhhhhshhhhhshhhh" may help him refocus to the behavior you are trying to teach him. Lastly and most importantly, OBEDIENCE TRAINING ASAP!!! Given a set of goals and boundaries will help you all immensely. Answered by Janice-HK Animal Speak 2 years ago
